Become a Leader
Becoming a Scout Leader is a rewarding way to support young people, get involved in your child’s Scouting journey, and contribute to your local community.
Many of our Leaders are parents of Joeys, Cubs and Scouts who decided they wanted to become more involved in the program.
As young people move through the sections, new Leaders are needed to help deliver the Scouting program. Each section ideally has three to five Leaders, and new Leaders are supported and mentored by experienced Leaders to ensure a smooth transition.
What’s in it for me?
Becoming a Leader is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. It gives you the opportunity to:
- spend time with your child and see them develop confidence and new skills
- support young people as they grow and achieve their goals
- meet new people and build friendships within the community
- contribute to something positive in your local area
Many Leaders say that volunteering in Scouting becomes one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things they do.
What is involved?
The time commitment is manageable. Leaders typically attend the weekly section meeting, which usually runs for around 10 weeks each school term.
With several Leaders in each section, responsibilities are shared and Leaders can occasionally take a night off. Some additional time may be needed for planning activities or attending camps.
There is very little financial cost to becoming a Leader. The Scout Group covers the cost of leader training, uniforms, and most resources.
I was never in Scouts or Guides
No previous Scouting experience is required. Many Leaders begin as parents who simply want to help.
Training, program resources, and ongoing support are provided, and experienced Leaders will guide you as you learn.
Leader training is provided through Scouts Victoria and includes introductory sessions and practical learning to help you develop the skills needed to deliver the Scouting program safely and effectively.
Is it difficult?
Most people find it much easier than they expected. The Scouting program provides structured activities and resources, and Leaders are supported by the Group Leader, other Leaders, and the District team.
Young people also commit to the Scout Promise and Law, which helps create a positive and respectful environment.
How do I get started?
If you are interested in becoming a Leader, please speak to one of the Leaders or the Group Leader.
You are welcome to attend a few meetings, help with activities, or join us on a camp to see what is involved before making a decision.
Many of our current Leaders began by simply helping for a few meetings before deciding to take on the role.
